Charyn Ash Grove

A relict grove of Sogdian ash in the Sartogay tract, Almaty Region. This ash survives only here, in the lower Charyn and in the canyon of its tributary the Temirlik. The grove has been a natural monument since 1964 and logging is banned. It lies within Charyn National Park.

A forest that outlived the Ice Age, half an hour from the canyon — almost nobody driving to Charyn knows it is there.
