ALZhIR, the Akmolinsk Camp for Wives of Traitors of the Motherland

The colloquial name of the 17th women's camp division of the Karaganda corrective labour camp within the Gulag system, in operation from 1938 to 1953. It was the largest Soviet women's camp. The name comes from its inmates: many were repressed under NKVD order No. 00486 as family members of traitors of the Motherland.

The museum stands on the camp site itself. It is a hard visit and a necessary one — this history is not hidden in Kazakhstan.
